Choose a Course
If you have not been involved with learning for some time you may not
be familiar with the courses available. We have provided links to a range of
web sites that can enable you to browse through your options.
There are courses to help you improve your basic skills, such as spoken
English, reading, writing and number skills. There are courses to improve
your academic qualifications, including GCSEs, A Levels and Degrees. There
are courses to increase your job skills, including short courses and
those leading to NVQ qualifications. When considering your choices it is a
good idea to consider the various factors that affect your decision, such as
what you want to achieve, your previous experience and your circumstances.
The benefits of learning are valuable, but when planning
your learning it will be important to consider how much it will cost. Some
courses, such as those for people who wish to learn to speak English, are
free, but others involve a fee. If you are not able to meet the cost of
a course you may be able to get help. People who are unemployed can get
training through Jobcentre Plus or
help through college learner support funds. People who are employed may
be able to get support from their employer or trades union. Others may
wish to consider an
Adult
Learning Grant (online
application is now available) or a
Learning Loan for
Homeowners.
